Earth Day volunteers

Dear All,

Thank you for volunteering to help with Earth Day. Here are a couple of things to keep in mind:

1) people who have signed-up to help on Wednesday, as well as anyone else who is available, please come to Dean Hall 105 at 4,30PM. We will need your help to chalk the layout of the booths and other pre-event set-up and will give you details about your jobs on Thursday.

2) people who have signed-up for Thursday: do NOT be late for your shift. Please check-in with the volunteering table (which will be located centrally, exact spot to be determined tomorrow) where you will also get your T-shirt and other information.

That’s about it!
Looking forward to seeing you there,

The Volunteering Committee

Hawaii news Now Cancelled

Aloha vendors and participators:

I just received news that they will not be doing a live broadcast tomorrow morning of UH manoa Earth Day because they will be covering the Lowes grand opening. I apologize to the people that were preparing to come early but I guess Shopping Malls have a priority over Grass Roots Earth Day events. It is sad but is an example of our reality. They may send some news people later in the day. Let`s work together and make this event the best it can be, plants some seeds and Inspire.

Sustainable and Organic Farm Training

Make a difference this Earth Day! get your hands dirty and create new planting plots on campus with SOFT!

Aloha Everyone,

This week, we will installing two new plots right in the middle of campus during the Earth Day festival. Please join us on Wednesday from 10-5 and on Thursday from 10-5 to help install our new plots and check out what we’re up to. We will be having our produce sale at the Thursday festival instead of our normal Monday produce sale.
Even though we have been experiencing a long and continuing string of banana theft, we’ve been granted a miracle and were somehow able to harvest FIVE DIFFERENT VARIETIES OF BANANA just in time for the Earth Day festival!! Hooray!
And if you thought that was neat, we will also be offering for the first time ever, KAVA! We dug it up, cleaned and packed it all just for you and have both dry powder and fresh-frozen available.
And since we are going to be working so hard this week, and we have Friday off, we’re going to mix it up a little and have the normal Magoon workday on Sunday from 9-5, NOT Saturday as per usual.
Details:
Wednesday: Earth Day fest plot installation day one. 10AM-5PM, Sustainability Courtyard.
Thursday: Earth Day fest plot installation day two. 10AM-5PM, Sustainability Courtyard.
Thursday: Produce sale @ Earth Day fest, Sustainability Courtyard, 10AM until sold out, come early!!!
Anticipated Produce: bananas, sweet potatoes, kava (dry and fresh frozen), taro, soursop, carrots, winged beans, lemongrass, basil, eggplant, malabar spinach, mizuna, kai choy, sweet potato greens.
Sunday: Workday at Magoon, 9AM to 5PM.

Cheers,
SOFT

SOFT is a student managed farm funded by the College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources (CTAHR). SOFT was started in 2007. Our members include undergraduate and graduate students, UH Faculty, and community members eager to learn about sustainable and organic farming practices.

Booth-space/Vendor Application

Earth-Day is for everyone!

Thank you for your interest in participating in the annual Earth Day festival in honor of Earth Day 2011 at UHM.  This year we are putting an even stronger emphasis on socially and environmentally responsible booths and vendors to help us celebrate the 41st anniversary of Earth Day. The purpose of this event is to showcase, educate, and celebrate with the public, the collective efforts of UH and the extended community’s in our growing movement toward a sustainable community for Hawai’i and beyond.

Our Mission for Participants

To provide local artists, musicians, vendors and sustainably oriented businesses/organizations, an opportunity to showcase their efforts to the community, network, educate, and sell/promote their products and services.

Criteria for Participation

Product / services / cause must demonstrate, engage, and educate participants in sustainability. In our third year of planning Earth Day at UH we are striving to reach a goal of zero-waste so all vendors who are selling items must use reusable bags to package. No single use plastics will be tolerated. Please be very specific in what your booth will be selling by including: where your product is from, what it is made from, why it is sustainable. We love to support our local vendors so please be thorough with this process! Each vendor needs to be a stand-alone system i.e. supply your own tables, chairs, tent, tape, scissors, shade structures, and other set-up materials. Please  note that the event will be outside and there will be no-limited solar electricity available.  Garbage and recycling facilities will be provided.
